Two Ships

She bought 40 cigarettes
Two lottery lucky dips
I imagined her on the oceans edge
Looking for one or two ships
To come on home
She lives alone with her dog
That leaves hairs on her coat
I imagine another water scene
Hoping she’s still afloat
Surfing on a wave
She speaks with the eloquence
Of days now cast
I wonder if the books on her shelf
Keep her in a past
Where she never relied
On forty cigarettes
And two lottery lucky dips
And standing at the oceans edge
Waiting for one or two ships
To come on home
