Chloe had always hated school. The idea of sitting in a classroom all day with people that you don't like, learning things that you don't care to learn and then having to sit exams for hours on end wasn't the most appealing way to spend the day.
“Well if you don't like it, you can leave in two years anyway. You're a smart girl Chlo, you can get your GCSE's easily and then decide what you want to do.” Chloe's dad said reassuringly after having to listen to another one of her school hating rants.
“TWO YEARS?!” Chloe shouted back as she slammed down the sandwich that her father had just made her for the second time after her complaining that the bread was cut the wrong way. Instead of reassuring her, he had mistakenly fuelled her fire further.
“That's ages! Why can't I just leave now? You could home school me?” Chloe was really clutching at straws now. She loved her father dearly, but he wasn't the cleverest of men. He was a grafter more than a thinker, but she was desperate to leave that place.
“Don't be so daft! You know I couldn't do that. We all have to do things we don't want to do Chloe. You think I want to go to work everyday? Of course I don't. But it's what I have to do to keep a roof over our heads and this is what you need to do to ensure that you have the best chances possible in life” he shouted. He took a deep breath in and composed himself. Chloe hadn't realised until now how tired her father looked. His hair looked thin and grey and his pale green eyes we now red and sunken. She was not going to be defeated though.
“But it's just so boring-”
“Chloe.” Her dad stopped her before she could finish her sentence. “Just eat your sandwich please.”
He leaned in and kissed her on her forehead the way he did everyday since she was born.
“I've got to go back to work and you need to go back to school, lunch is nearly over now.” He said as he pulled away and leant down to do up his work boots.
“Fine then, I'll see you later dad.” Chloe sighed as she admitted defeat.
The door slammed shut behind her as her dad left. She looked down at her sandwich and shook her head.
“He knows I don't like cucumber.”
