Table Ten

People sit at table 10 and make room for one more,
Empty glasses on the table, ashtrays to the full
Excuse me, can we have another round in?
From outside the window, the group is deep in conversation
Laughing, joking, all in the latest fashions at table 10
Conversation centers around the working day
And the funny tales of the weekend
A couple seat at table 10, ready to eat for the day
Talking of days gone by and days they look to
Sipping wine and looking deep in each other's eyes
Of which they only know
A newspaper open on the sport pages on table 10
A solitary man picks up his pint and drinks
Time to relax, forget the day he's just had
Going home and seeing his flat
Getting ready for the boys night out
The uniformed girl sits at table 10
Thinks of how many times she's cleaned it today
Heaves a deep sign of relief
Drinks her first of the night
And wonders where to go
Table 10 is wiped down and polished
Sitting there empty
Waiting for the next group of people
To talk of lives and woes.
