Derek drove to his house.
Derek entered the door to his house.
"Hello, Derek."
"Who are you? How did you get in?"
"We are from the Culture Department of the U.S. Government. We are here to ask you some questions?"
"I'm an American now. I don't need to go through a test."
"You are politically an American. Now we have to determine that you are culturally an American."
"Is this how you test people?"
"It's the element of surprise. We don't want you to be prepared."
Derek sat down.
The woman sat down.
"My name is Francine."
"Hello Francine."
"Derek, are you Achilles?"
"No I am not nor am I a member of the Achilles' Heel Club."
"Are you a homosexual?"
"Yes, but I am not Swann."
"Are you a British Spy?"
"No. Do you really think the British would accept a Korean as a spy?"
"I really don't know."
"Does the CIA accept Jews as spies?"
"And are you an ardent supporter of Israel?"
"No."
"My name is Dick."
"Hello Dick."
"
1. You are a Korean.
2. You are a Korean-American.
3. You are an American."
"I am an American."
"What about you is no longer Korean?"
"I no longer think that I can know everything."
"What about is you is now American?"
"I believe in democracy, capitalism, and Protestantism."
"Doesn't Prostestantism say all your non-believing ancestors went to hell."
"Yes."
"Doesn't that bother you? Isn't there a deep tradition of ancestor worship in South Korea?"
"Yes, but a overly reverent attitude toward my ancestors and father has stalled the effective development of my ego which is formed through the constructive conflict with the father, resolving the Oedipus Complex through identity differentiation."
"Which part of you is no longer American?"
"My body."
"Everyone sees my skin color and keeps on reminding me of where I came from."
"It's multiculturalism."
"It's racism from a Euro-American centric viewpoint."
"You want to be an American..."
"Yes."
"My name is Eric."
"Hello Eric."
"Tell me about your mother."
"My mother was a Mu-Dang, a Korean witch."
"Tell me more."
"She lived in a cave in the mountains. She would imitate the voices of the dead... grandmothers and grandfathers of the townfolk who died recently. Then she would tell the townpeople the secrets of the grandfathers and grandmothers and the townfolk said that she was crazy. They wanted to kill her but they were too afraid of her. She would climb to the top of the mountain and jump up and down on the rocks next to the cliff. One day, she jumped off the mountain and flew down to her death."
"Are you angry?"
"No. Her sister took care of me."
"Are you angry at blacks?"
"Why? Because the culture charges them with violence and sexuality while Koreans are seen as castrated, servile creatures?"
"Are you angry?"
