Being Korean American 2: Redished

Teachers in South Korea:
I can't recall any of my teachers' names. I just remember one female teacher. She was pretty tall and had black curly hair. She had a very domineering presence from what I remember, and to tell you the truth, I don't remember much at all about her. All I really remember is that she scotchtaped my mouth for talking too much. When I really think about it, she formed my idea of the "witch." She would often say that she had an eye in the back of her head. I really believed her. When I visited Salem, Massachusettes a few years ago, I realized what a witch was. A witch has 2 egos (not ego and alterego either but 2 egos. Puritans hunt witches. They no longer literally murder them in the old days, but they perform a thorough character assassination.) I realized this while looking at a picture that showed the face of an old woman. If you looked from another angle, it was the face of a young woman. The way that witches were created was through a psychological trauma which splits their ego in two. We talk of shamans being split in two, but usually shamans become an archetype. Some shamans think they are Jesus Christ, Buddha, the reincarnation of Jim Morrison, etc, not another ego. Anyway, she held a kind of attraction for me. There was this young girl, about 6 years old who also had curly hair. She would sometimes flirt with me as I walked home. I remember eating cooked caterpillars dipped in some kind of sauce. I remember another type of soup that I really enjoyed eating which I could buy with a dime. Anyway, teachers. I don't think I learned a thing at school. Even now, one of my favorite songs is, "You don't need no education," by Pink Floyd. After all, they are just bricks in the wall. What do teachers really teach you? They teach you how to accept society as it is, that is, to accept the good and evils that society has accepted as being the norm. I had no interest in society. Family life was very good and I worshipped my mother. She was a businesswoman who was involved in Real Estate and A driver's license clinique. A chauffeur would drive her around and I thought of myself as very rich although I wasn't. The teacher, the female teacher, I later found out through my mother that the teacher wanted me to be class president and wanted some money for making me class president. I have no idea why she wanted me to be class president. I wasn't a very good student. There was no way in hell I could be class president. I remember getting really good grades on a test I never studied for. There was no way those grades were mine. But that's when I suspected something rotten.

'what do teachers ever teach
'what do teachers ever teach you?' Perhaps their best use is to signpost us into learning paths that take our fancy. A teacher may have read a lot of books, be familiar with a lot of debates and be willing to share that in a good way. (I am have not ever worked as a teacher but one of my goals is to find some part-time work as an adult education tutor teaching groups of interested people to study poetry. Not to teach creative writing; to get them to look at the work of others.) Elsie
