A long time (since that winter)

It's been a long time since I came around,
But has it been long enough
To forget the misty breaths that passed
Between us?
Our bond akin to icy water
We could barely see through,
The pace we were living back then
Gave nothing away of my feelings for you.
We would grab each other and laugh,
And I would dream of a winter love so unrequited,
All these freezing, reckless nights,
They made me wretch and write verses.
My nervous laugh was only for you,
I used to melt like a snowman around you,
Leaving nothing but a carrot,
At your feet.
It's funny now to think we will meet this Christmas,
You won't be in love (and never have been),
I will have moved on but
Memories will resurface in blizzards.
And what became of our youth?
In the realisation of life,
We neglect our love and friendship,
One borne out of the cold,
But it's winter again, and it reminds me
Of how I met you on the shortest day of the year,
And how you brought the warmth of summer,
To my frost-bitten lips.
