Autumn. The starlings over Abbey Park
pinwheel, turn and break the cold metal sky,
splinters of ink, diffusing. Sudden dark
shakes and fills the rough-barked, aching trees;
shifts roosts, stills wings; pauses of branches
stripped by the east wind of skittering leaves.
The air lies calm, heavy. Murmuration.
Tiny burst. Heartbeat. A slick explosion
of black twists, reaching. Your cool eye blinks. Sees.
