If you live by the sword
Your victory will be short lived
Your foes will eventually conquer you
Truths lay out to bind with sadness
I confess I have fought well
For every battle won a little piece of me lost
Walls crumble under the weight of tears
Undeserved suffering walks honest miles
Not all battles can be won
Casualties of war rest uneasy on the brave
Stone monuments gather leaves like the fallen
Flowers left to remember what some would rather forget

Hi Mate, certainly wont be your last. This was very good as Stan says the last two lines are terrific.

This is quite moving - I love the word 'brave' in the last stanza, where, with the idea of resting uneasy, it manages to also evoke the word 'grave'. I'm a little unsure what the third line is saying about truth but I will certainly think more about it. Very evocative work.

Hello Syphon,
Enjoyed your poem very much. The standout line for me was 'Undeserved suffering walks honest miles.' But I too liked the last two lines. Made me think of the Cenotaph!
'Truths lay out to bind with sadness' I kept wanting to read it as Truths laid out to bind with sadness'
But hey ho what do I know?
