The Lily and The Mirror

On the bleached pine table
A cold faced mirror stood
An icy smooth speculum
Framed in a foreign wood.
In day reflecting nothing more
Than the parquet floor
At night its scope impaired
By a few old books on law.
Time was no deterrent to the mirrors vacant stare
Until an Arum Lily
Placed by a fleeting hand
Stood wrapped in a crystal glass
Upon a silver stand.
So now released from loves seclusion
The mirror basked in passions bright fusion
Genuflecting with the pleasure
Of its captured floral treasure.
But only her reflection the Arum did address
And so her shining suitor began to seek redress-
With each spear of amber light his mission was begun
Magnifying every burning shaft of the golden sun.
By aiming stiletto moonbeams at her fragile heart
The demise of his affection did unduly start.
But fate was the catalyst that cast a careless hand
Leaving just an empty frame of foreign wood
An empty silver stand
Spiteful shards of broken glass on the parquet floor
A gentle ochre dusting on a few old books on law.
