Once, in a far away kingdom, there was a tree, in the branches of which little imp like creatures called Grovelins lived and children were warned by their mothers never to play near the tree or else, they were told, "a Grovelin will leap onto your back and you will never be free of him".
Unfortunately there was one boy whose mother was not so wise and she had never told him about the tree and so he did play near it.
But then, while he was playing, a Grovelin leapt down out of the tree and clung on tight to his back and for the rest of his young life it held on tightly refusing to let go.
It clung on while he slept in bed; it clung on while he was eating; it clung on while he was bathing, it even clung on while he was in school and often his school teacher would make him leave the room because the Grovelin on his back was making too much noise.
One day however, the boy got so tired of having the Grovelin on his back that he went to see an old wisewoman in the forest and asked her what he must do to be free of the Grovelin.
"The only way to get rid of a Grovelin", she said, "Is to go to a place which is very scary and dangerous and when the Grovelin gets scared it will run away".

And so the boy, knowing that nearby was a cave where a ferocious monster was supposed to live went there, taking his father, the blacksmith's hammer with him to fight the monster with and as soon as he entered the cave, the Grovelin, hearing the monster roaring and shrieking like a choir of banshees started to get scared, shivering and shaking but it still refused to let go and so the boy was forced to go deeper into the cave and as he went deeper the sound of the roaring became louder like thunder and lightning so that then, hearing the noise, the Grovelin got so scared that its teeth began to chatter.
But even though its was shivering and shaking and had chattering teeth, still the Grovelin refused to let go of his back and so the boy was forced to go yet deeper into the cave and now the roaring became so loud that, hearing the noise that sounded like the earth quaking, the Grovelin got so scared that all its hair turned white but still it refused to let go.
So then the boy went so deep inside the cave that the noise of the monsters roaring was deafening and finally, the Grovelin got so scared that it let go and ran away.
As it was running away however, the boy saw the source of the noise and, to his relief, it was not a ferocious monster but a beautiful princess chained to a wall of the cave.
Unfortunately, the princess could not open her mouth without a monsters roar coming out and so while she was roaring, to silence the roar, the boy kissed her and when he did suddenly the princess was able to speak again.
She told him that an evil witch had put her in the cave and chained her to the wall then cursed her so that whenever she tried to call for help a dragons roar would come out of her mouth scaring people away.
"Fortunately", she said, "When you kissed me it must have lifted the witches curse".
But then, using the blacksmiths hammer he had brought as a weapon instead to break the princess's chain, the boy took the Princess back to her fathers kingdom and soon afterwards the two fell in love and were married, living happily ever after.
