Once upon a time a little peasant girl named Cintinella was born who, when she cried wept diamonds from her eyes and because she could do this an unscrupulous old witch stole the child and locked her away in a prison in her house and the child was told that she would never be set free.
And just as the witch had hoped the child got so sad that she would regularly cry, covering the floor of her prison with diamonds that the witch would then come and sweep into a dustpan with her broom and after a short time the evil woman became very very rich.
But then one day a little worm poked its head up from the witches cellar and asked the little girl,
"Little girl why are you so sad".
And when the girl told the worm about her sad and lonely life locked up in the witches dungeon, the worm wept so much that it couldn't bear it and so it went out to tell the girls sad tale to a bird.
Now at first the bird, seeing the worm was going to eat it because that is what birds do but when the bird heard the worms sad tale of the girl locked in the witch's cellar it too started to cry until it could bear it no longer.
So then the bird went and told its tale to a cat and the cat, seeing the bird was about to eat it because that is what cats do but when the cat heard the sad tale of the girl locked in the witch's cellar it began to cry aswell until its whiskers were hung with tears like ornaments upon a christmas tree and the cat, because it too could not bear the sadness of the tale went to tell it to its master.
When the cat told its master however, a young man named Archimbaldo, the man did not weep, instead he burned with anger and he went to the house of the witch and hammered upon her door and when she opened the door, he demanded that she let the little girl go and so the old woman said she would take him to her and that then they could leave together.
However when the old witch had taken the man upstairs to the girl room, instead of letting him see the girl she took out a long dagger and stabbed him with it.
Unfortunately for the witch the man, like the little girl, had been cursed from birth with a strange condition, whenever he bled, his blood turned to fire and when the witch stabbed him she got his blood on her clothes and the drops of blood became flames that, spreading over her body, burned her to ash.
But then the man struggling on, though he was still bleeding used the witches keys to unlock the girls dungeon and set her free.
Then the girl, who because she had spent so long in the witches dungeon, had grown into a beautiful woman went to live with Archimbaldo and not long after they were married and when she smiled with joy, Archimbaldo said,
"Your tears may turn to diamonds but, to me, your smiles are worth more than all the diamonds in the world".
