Once upon a time a little girl saw a giraffe eating fruit off a sausage tree and, wondering what it tasted like, she asked the giraffe,
"Oh giraffe. I am not tall enough to reach. Can I have a fruit from the sausage tree?".
"Sausage fruit is not for little girls", said the giraffe, in a voice long and thin like his neck, taking his fruit in his mouth and walking away.
But then she saw a baboon climb up into the Sausage tree and eat one of its fruits and she asked,
"Oh baboon. I cannot climb up into the sausage tree. Can you throw me down one of its fruits?".
"Sausage fruits are not for little girls", said the baboon in a cheeky monkey voice, leaping down out of the tree with a sausage fruit in each hand and running away.
But then the little girl saw an elephant reach up with a long trunk and pick a sausage fruit from the tree and she asked the elephant,
"Oh elephant. My arms are not as long as your trunk. Can you pick me a fruit?".
"Sausage fruits are not for little girls", said the elephant, in a deep, booming voice, before carrying off some fruit in his mouth.
But then, as sausage fruits do when they are ripe, one of them fell down out of the tree and the little girl was about to pick up the sausage fruit when a snake nearby said in a hissing voice,
"Sssssausage fruitssss are not for little girlsssss".
And scared of the snake the little girl ran away home to her mother and crying told her about all the animals that had refused to give her fruit.
"I am grateful to those animals", said her mother, "Because the Sausage fruit is poisonous when it is eaten raw and had you eaten it you would have been very, very sick".
But then her mother gave her the roasted seeds of a sausage fruit, which are edible, to try and tasting them she said, screwing up her face,
"Yuk. I do not like sausage fruit anyway".
