One bright, sunny afternoon Kali was walking through the forest, picking ingredients for a magical potion she was thinking of trying out when she heard a loud sobbing coming from behind a nearby tree.
“Boo-hoo!”, said the sobbing voice, “Oh, boo-hoo!”.
And, when Kali looked behind the tree she saw a huge and very ferocious looking lion but it wasn’t roaring or snarling like lions usually do, it was crying and holding a paw against the side of its mouth and looking very glum.
“What’s the matter”, asked Kali, “Why are you crying?”.
“Go away”, replied the lion, growling angrily, “Can’t you see that I’ve got a very bad toothache”.
“Well”, said Kali, feeling sorry for the lion, “Perhaps I can help. I’m a sort of a wizard you know or at least I’m practicing to be one. Perhaps I can work a spell that will make your tooth ache better”.
“Alright then”, said the lion, clutching his mouth in pain again, “But, please, hurry up. I don’t know how much more of this terrible toothache I can stand”.
So then Kali waved her magic wizards wand in the air and said a magical spell.
“Abracadabra, abracaday”, she said, “Take this poor lions tooth ache away”.
Then, suddenly, there was a flash of bright lighting and a puff of smoke and, when the smoke cleared, Kali saw the lions sore tooth drop out.
“You’ve done it”, said the lion smiling, “My tooth ache is gone”.
“Oh good”, said Kali, feeling happy for the lion,“I’m glad that I could help”.
Then Kali, putting her wand away, turned to leave.
However, before the collie wizard could get more than ten inches away, she heard a terrible, loud, frightening roar which startled her and then the lion leapt in front of her, blocking her path with its large paws.
“Just a minute”, said the lion, now with a rather mean look upon its face, “Now that my tooth ache’s gone, I’m beginning to feel rather hungry”.
“Oh, really”, said Kali, shivering with fear, “W-w-ell, p-p-erhaps I could c-conjure you up a s-sandwich or maybe you’d p-prefer a nice apple pie”.
“No”, said the lion, circling Kali and licking its large furry lips, “I wouldn’t like a sandwich and I wouldn’t like an apple pie. I’d rather eat you up instead”.
“Oh no”, said Kali, cowering and frantically waving her magic wand, trying to work a spell but stuttering so much with fear that she couldn’t speak.
Just then, however, from behind her, the collie wizard heard a strange sound like tinkling bells and there was a bright flash of pink light and, looking round, she saw a fairy appear.
“Who are you?”, asked Kali, surprised.
“I’m the tooth fairy”, said the fairy, “Has someone round about here just lost a tooth?”.
Kali thought quickly and then, picking up the lions tooth that, having fallen out, was lying nearby, she said, “Yes. I have”.
“Oh good”, said the fairy taking the tooth from her, “Now I have to give you your silver coin”.
“But I don’t want a coin”, said the collie, “I’d much rather have a wish. I wish you’d make this lion stop trying to eat me”.
“Well”, said the fairy, scratching her head with her wand, “I don’t normally grant wishes. That’s another fairies job but I suppose I could do it just this once”.
And then, saying this, she pointed the pink star on the end of her wand towards the lion that was still looking at Kali hungrily and a bolt of pink lightning shot out of the end of her wand and struck the lion on its nose and then, in an instant, Kali saw the large ferocious lion transformed into a little marmalade coloured cat.
“Miaiow?”, asked the cat, looking around, bewildered.
“Oh thank you, thank you very much”, said Kali to the tooth fairy.
“Don’t mention it”, said the Fairy smiling and waving goodbye as she flew away back to the fairy kingdom.
But now, turning around and looking at the cat, Kali thought perhaps it was her turn to be ferocious.
“Woof”, she barked, loudly and, terrified, the little marmalade cat ran away.
