Once there was a prince named Roxano who was being forced, by his parents, into marriage with a foreign princess but he was already in love with a local peasant girl named Josephella and wanted to marry her and so he had a tiny crown and tiny suit of princely clothes made and dressed up a mouse in them before escaping his palace dressed as a palace guard and running off to join his true love.
Discovering the mouse crawling upon his pillow his parents and all their subjects were convinced that the prince had been turned into a mouse.
Wizards and doctors were invited from all around the world to try and turn the mouse back into a prince to no avail.
But then, while the prince was living in a cottage in the forest with his peasant bride he heard that, in his absence, a witch, named Hermesia, had taken control of his fathers kingdom, killed his parents and locked the mouse that the prince had left behind in a cage.
"What have I done?", he thought to himself, sadly, "Because I was not there to fight, my fathers kingdom has fallen into evil hands".
But then, one day, while the prince was in the forest collecting wood he happened upon a cave where there lay the remains of an old wizard with his wand and the prince, seeing the wizard had a plan.
Putting on the wizards robes and picking up his wand he returned to his palace and said to the guards at the gate, "I am a wizard more powerful than the witch you serve and, if she will invite me in, I will prove it in a battle of magical power".
And when she was told about the wizard at the gates claiming to be more powerful than her, the witch grew curious and invited him in.
Then the two had a furious magical battle, the witch using her wand against the princes wand, performing feats of magic.
Unfortunately, whatever the prince was able to do with his wand, the witch was always able to do better.
"Ha!", said the witch, "How could you dare say your power was stronger than mine, your power is obviously much weaker".
But this was just what the Prince had hoped for because then he replied, "My power is stronger than yours because I can do something you can't do".
"Oh?", asked the witch, "And what is that?".
"I can restore the mouse prince to his human form and you cannot", said the prince.
Cackling, the witch had the mouse which she kept in a cage brought to her and then, pointing her wand at the mouse, she began to speak all kinds of incantations.
"I'll show you", she said, "Who has the greater power".
But whatever she did she could not turn the mouse back into a prince because it had never been a prince to begin with.
Infact the witch used up all of the power in her wand trying to perform the impossible task.
"I don't believe it", she shrieked in despair, "Why can't I do it? Why?".
Just at that moment, however, the prince threw off his wizards hat, his fake beard and robes revealing who he truly was.
Realizing she had been tricked, the witch angrilly raised up her wand to smite the prince but, unfortunately, because she had used up all her wands power she couldn't and the prince, raising up his own wand turned the witch into a mouse just like the one in the cage.
After that, the prince took back control of his kingdom; he made his beloved Josephella his queen and they both lived happily ever after
