Mr Morpheus looked down from the top of the Sears tower at the panic ensuing far below, people in large screaming crowds running from a giant, laughing spaghetti creature with bulging meatball eyes.
"Hmm? A giant spaghetti monster terrorizing the city", thought the hero, "Thats odd to say the least and there's only one explanation I can think of. Someone else has come through into this world from the Dream dimension".
But then, using his dream powers to materialize a giant fork, the dream master hurled it, like a harpoon, towards the giant spaghetti monster and, lodging itself deep in the side of the monsterous mountain of italian cuisine, at his command the fork began to twist as fast as a tornado until it had twisted up the entire monster in its prongs.
"Garrr!", growled the wound up spaghetti creature spying Mr Morpheus through one of its meatball eyes, "So my brother we meet at last".
"Brother?", asked Mr Morpheus, surprised.
But then the purple suited prince of dreams saw the Spaghetti monster start to mutate, its noodle like limbs transforming into bulging, bicep laden arms and suddenly, infront of him, instead of a living mountain of psychotic pasta, Mr Morpheus saw the dark suited, hulking and menacing horseheaded form of his evil half-brother from the dream dimension, Nightmayor.
"My father, Lord Horror, has been watching your exploits in the mortal realm with great interest", said Nightmayor in a wrasping voice, his dark horses head grinning evilly, "And he believes it is time for the Nightmare realm to invade this world and show its feeble inhabitance the true meaning of terror".
"But my mother, Queen Carousel of the Dreamrealm, would never allow such a thing", said Mr Morpheus.
"Not unless someone was holding her beloved son, Morpheus hostage", said Nightmayor, his jet black eyes suddenly blazing with blood red fire and his black mane bursting into flames, "That is why my father has sent me to capture you".
And saying that, the evil Nightmayor stretched out his hand towards Mr Morpheus and it started to morph and grow into a gigantic, hairy nightmare spider that, wrapping its eight sharp clawed legs around him, grabbed him up like a tiny blue suited chess piece.
Morpheus struggled to break the grip of the giant spider but its legs, each as broad as a tree trunk, were impossible to move.
"Give up, Brother", said Nightmayor laughing malevolently as he watched Morpheus struggle, "You're Dream powers are no match for my Nightmares".
"He's right", thought Mr Morpheus, gasping with exhaustion and beginning to despair, "His powers are stronger than mine. Not to mention I hate spiders. Ick".
But then, suddenly, a light went on in the Dreammasters brain.
"Hmm? I wonder what Nightmares are afraid of?", he thought.
Then, suddenly, Mr Morpheus started to mutate into the form of Lord Horror, the grim, zombie faced ruler of the Nightmare realm.
"Nightmayor, you incompetent fool", shouted Lord Horror with a voice that echoed like thunder.
"Father?", asked Nightmayor, surprised, "But what happened to Mr Morpheus?".
"You let him get away, thats what happened", yelled Lord Horror, "Just as I expected. I asked you to do a simple thing and you made a mess of it, just like you make a mess of everything".
"I'm sorry father", said Nightmayor and, as the evil villain was apolgizing, he started to shrink.
"Sorry's not good enough", said Lord Horror, "I should never have entrusted you with such an important job. You're just a failure. You've always been a failure".
Nightmayor shrunk further, becoming almost as small as a chess knight.
"I'm sorry father", he said in a now high pitched voice, "I'm sorry I let you down".
But then, freed from Nightmayors tarantula grip, Mr Morpheus flew down onto the sidewalk, placing an upturned glass over a tiny Nightmare and sliding a piece of card under it just as if he were removing a little housespider.
"Morpheus", squeaked the tiny Nightmayor angrilly, looking up and seeing Mr Morpheus above him, "You tricked me".
"I did, didn't I", said Mr Morpheus, grinning, "And now I'm going to send you back where you belong, back to the realm of Nightmares".
And saying this, Mr Morpheus closed his eyes and concentrated and the card, the glass and the tiny, angry Nightmayor within it all vanished in a twinkling glow of blue.
But then, suddenly, from behind him, there was a blinding flash of light and, turning, Mr Morpheus saw some kind of giant golden glowing portal opening up.
"Are we here?", asked a timid voice from inside the portal.
"Yes, Hopkins. We're here. Announce me please", said another voice; that of an elderly but refined woman.
Then, out of the whirling portal, to the Dreammasters surprise, there hopped a small white rabbit carrying a gold trumpet who then started to blow a fanfare before, clearing his throat, he said,
"Ahem! Presenting Queen Carousel of the Dream realm".
Then, stepping slowly and regally from the portal, Mr Morpheus saw his mother, Queen Carousel emmerge dressed in a gown woven from glowing dreams and wearing her sparkling dreamcrown upon her head.
"Your majesty", said Mr Morpheus, bowing.
"No need for formalities, my son", said Queen Carousel, "I only came to say that we too have been watching, with pride, your adventures in the mortal realm and we saw how you defended it from our enemies, the Nightmares and to let you know that the Dream realm will always be here if you need our help".
But then all the streetlights on the street lit up with bright colours and the sky filled with fireworks, the lullaby anthem of the dream realm drifted softly through the air and the evening that had begun like a terrible nightmare ended like a very happy dream.
