A suitor loved a woman
and he wanted her to know
so he gave her songbirds in a cage
but she just let them go.
Then he bought her gold and diamonds
but she gave them to the poor
and said to him, “I love you
but I love my freedom more”.

Thank you, Maggy. I love folk ballads. They're wonderful narrative poems that tell, usually, very gripping and dramatic stories often with strong female characters and, although this poem is quite short, I think its really influenced by my listening to ballads. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
