Long ago there was a turkey and long ago there was a boy called Tom who loved that turkey.
Infact it was the best pet he had ever had.
He would even take it for walks just like a dog and throw sticks for it even though the Turkey would never fetch them, just peck at them and make a gobbling sound.
Unfortunately Tom's parents had only bought the turkey to kill it and stuff it and cook it for Christmas dinner.
But Tom hated the thought of eating the bird that had become his best friend so, on the night of Christmas Eve, creeping out of his house and into his snow covered garden, he let the turkey out of its hutch and said to it,
"Fly away, Turkey! Quickly, before the sun comes up and my parents wake up and make you into a turkey dinner".
Unfortunately, what Tom didn't realize is that Turkey's can't fly.
Infact the bird wouldn't fly even when little Tom climbed up onto its back and tugged upon its lead like you would with the reins of a flying horse or reindeer.
"Oh, Turkey", sighed Tom, unhappily, "I really wish you would fly"
But then, just as Tom was sitting on the Turkeys back, who should fly over head but Father Christmas in his flying sleigh and, hearing Tom's wish, because it was Christmas Eve, he sprinkled some of his magic golden fairy dust upon Tom and the Turkey.
And when he did, suddenly, to the amazement of both of them, the Turkey started to rise up high into the air.
"Turkey!", shouted Tom with joy, looking down and seeing his snowy garden far below, "You're flying! you're really flying!".
The turkey just made its usual gobbling sound, quite bewildered by what was happening.
But then Tom pulled on the turkey's lead again and, without even thinking, the turkey stuck out its wings like an eagle or an albatross and it started to shoot forwards across the sky almost as fast as a rocket.
"Wee-hee!", shouted Tom, excited by flying on the turkeys back.
And, as the turkey started to grow in confidence as a flyer, suddenly it began to do other daring things, like soaring up above the snowclouds and swooping low over snowcapped rooves, forests and frozen lakes.
It even looped and whirled through the air like an aeroplane and then it flew so high that, reaching up with one of his mittened hands, Tom was able to pluck one of the glowing silver stars down from heaven.
"This will make a great Christmas present for my Mum", he said to the turkey as he put the star in one of his coat pockets.
But then, looking down, suddenly Tom saw a big red house covered in twinkling fairylights and, standing outside of the house and waving up at him was a man in a red suit with a big white beard and lots of little men dressed in green with bells upon their hats.
"It must be Santa Clause. We must be over the North Pole", said Tom with wonder in his eyes, "And those little men must be his elf helpers".
But then, hearing this, the turkey started to spiral slowly downwards before, gently coming into land right infront of a jolly laughing Santa.
"Ho! Ho! Ho!", he said, upon seeing Tom and the turkey land, "Merry Christmas and welcome to the North Pole".
But then, after Tom had got down from the back of the turkey, Santa Clause led them both into his magic workshop and there he gave the turkey a bowl of corn to eat and Tom a bowl of chocolates and sweets that fizzed and popped and changed colours and flavours in his mouth.
"These are delicious", said Tom, smiling happily.
"Thank you", said Santa, "I will tell the elf chef who made them that you liked them. He'll be so pleased".
But then, looking down at his turkey, Tom started to worry again about what would become of him.
"Don't worry", said Santa Clause, seeming to sense Toms fears, "No harm will ever come to your turkey. I'll see to that".
"Oh thank you", said Tom, giving Santa a hug.
But then, just when everything seemed to be working out like magic, suddenly, with a loud bang, the door of Santas work shop came crashing down and an army of big, ugly and very angry looking trolls came marching into it carrying large and strange looking silver guns.
"Get out of my work shop", Santa shouted at them, "How dare you come barging in here".
But the leader of the trolls just bellowed with evil laughter and then, pointing his silver gun at Santa, fired a bright blue ray at him that, with a loud zapping sound, turned poor Santa to ice.
Then the other trolls fired their guns at Santas elves and even Tom and his turkey, turning them all to frozen statues.
"Ha! Ha! Ha!", laughed the leader of the trolls, "Now Santas workshop and all its magic officially belongs to the troll kingdom".
Desperately, Tom struggled to move but he couldn't because he was frozen like a block of ice.
"Oh", he thought, "I wish it was those evil trolls who were frozen instead of us".
But then, suddenly, just as Tom had finished making his wish, the star that he had put in his pocket; the one that he had plucked down from the sky, started to glow.
Infact it glowed so brightly that, even through his coat pocket, everyone could see it glow and then, as it was glowing, suddenly Toms wish started coming true; all of the trolls in Santas work shop turning to ice while Tom, his Turkey, Santa and all of his elves were turned back to normal again.
"Oh thank you, Tom", said Santa, "You and your wish have saved us all and Christmas from those evil Trolls".
But then, as Santas elves were carrying the frozen trolls away to have the evilness magically removed from their hearts, Santa said that it was time that Tom and his turkey went back home and, reaching into a pocket of his big red coat, he sprinkled another handfull of golden fairy dust upon them.
Fast as the tinkling of a sleighbell or the twinkling in a Christmas fairies eye Tom and the Turkey were whooshed across time and space back to Toms snow covered garden and just as, looking around, they began to realize where they were, suddenly, out of Toms house and into the garden came Toms mum and dad.
Frightened that they were going to kill the turkey,Tom hugged it tightly and shouted to Santa, "Help! Help, Santa. Don't let them hurt him".
"Don't worry", said his mum, smiling and petting the Turkey, "Me and your Dad have thought about how much you love the turkey and we've both decided to become vegetarians".
And hearing this news, Tom was so happy that he gave both his mother and his father a big Christmas hug.
"Ho! Ho! Ho!", he heard Santa Clause say as he went flying by over head in his sleigh, "My Christmas gift to you, Tom. Merry Christmas!"
Infact it was the best pet he had ever had.
