It was Saturday night. David sat on the edge of the couch. Beside
David on the couch was David's girlfriend. David's girlfriend was
called Sarah. Sarah had her legs curled up beneath her. David looked at
the television. Sarah read a book. David leant over a small glass
table. Eleven lottery tickets were placed on that table. David looked
at the lottery tickets. Just in case God existed.
David worked on a production line. In a factory. In East Ham. Eight
hours a day. Monday to Friday. David twisted the tops off whisky
bottles. Poured the whisky out the damaged bottles into a large vat.
Three years David had done this job. Most people only lasted a couple
of weeks. It was perhaps the most boring job in the world.
Many times David thought about leaving the factory. Going to college.
Getting some qualification. However for now, David stayed in the
factory. It was close to David's home in Plaistow.
Sarah came from a good family. Sarah had a good job. Sarah earned a lot
of money. Sarah never wanted for anything. Sarah loved David very much.
Sarah didn't mind David hadn't much money. Sarah earned enough money
for both of them. Sarah earned more in a month than David earned in a
year. David however would never accept any money from Sarah.
All Sarah wanted from life was to be happy. Sarah knew how important
love was. David was the most wonderful person Sarah had ever met. Sarah
wanted to spend the rest of her life with David. Sarah was twenty seven
years of age. The fact that David had no money never entered Sarah's
mind. Money didn't matter. Sarah just loved David for who David was.
Sarah had experience of men before David. Sarah valued the genuine
article when it came along. All Sarah could see was David's beautiful
smile. No matter what happened. All Sarah could see was David's
beautiful smile.
But David had become obsessed with money. Because David didn't have
much money. Every week David played the lottery. So David and Sarah
stayed in every Saturday night. David would look at the television.
Sarah would read a book. It was Saturday night. David looked at the
television. Sarah read a book. Sarah knew what would happen. After the
lottery draw was over. When David hadn't won. David would become
morose. Go into a bad mood. The lottery balls dropped. David marked off
his numbers. David hadn't won.
The man inside the television said "And that's the lottery number's for
another week". David gave out a sigh. Sarah peeked over the top of her
book. David put his head in his hands.
Sarah spoke.
"No luck then"?
"No" David answered.
"Still, never mind, maybe next week, eh"
David didn't answer. David looked at the television. Then David
spoke.
"You do love me Sarah, don't you"?.
David turned and looked at Sarah. Dark eyes were tinged with
guilt.
"I mean" David said "You're not fed up with me, are you?
"David, how many times do I have to tell you" said Sarah. 'I don't care
how much money you have". Sarah said ' If I wanted a man with money, I
would have one' David knew Sarah was right. Sarah was beautiful. Sarah
had long auburn hair. Every feature of Sarah's face complimented
another. Sarah could get any man Sarah wanted. Sarah was the kind of
girl you'd see in a glossy magazine. On the arm of some up and coming
film director. David had to win the lottery.
If David won the lottery. Sarah would have a bouquet of roses every
day. If David won the lottery. Sarah would be the most loved woman on
Earth. If David won the lottery. Sarah would travel the world. If David
won the lottery. Sarah would stay in the best hotels. Eat in the best
restaurants. Shop in the best shops. If David won the lottery. Sarah
would be the happiest woman that ever lived. If David won the lottery.
Sarah would want for nothing. If David won the lottery.
Sarah took David's hand and squeezed it tightly. Sarah loved David so
much. David looked back at Sarah. For a moment David forgot about the
lottery. David forgot about money. All David could see was the love in
Sarah's eyes. Perhaps Sarah really did love David even without money.
David knew he thought about the lottery too much. But David hated being
poor. Hated not being able to shower his Sarah with gifts. Why should
David be poor. Everyone seemed to have more money than David. It just
wasn't fair.
It was Saturday night. David looked at the television. Sarah read a
book. Sarah was at her parents in Hampshire. It was rare Sarah didn't
spend Saturday night with David. Sarah felt guilty. Sarah missed David.
But it felt good to get away. David looked at the television. Sarah
read a book. David checked his numbers. David won the lottery. David
laughed hysterically. David phoned Sarah. "I've won the lottery"! David
said. "Sarah! I've just won the lottery"! Sarah was delighted to hear
David's voice. "Come back to London quick"! David said
"It's late, I'll come back tomorrow" said Sarah
"No" David insisted "Come back now"!
David waited for Sarah to arrive. David telephoned the lottery
commission. The lottery commission confirmed David's winning ticket.
David had won at least six million pounds. David waited for Sarah to
arrive. At midnight the doorbell rang. It was a policeman. The
policeman asked David his name. The policeman asked to come in. The
policeman said there had been a car accident. The driver's name was
Sarah Reade. The policeman said he was sorry. Sarah died on the way to
hospital. It was Saturday night. He remembered. It was simple. He
remembered. It was Saturday night. He remembered. It was simple. David
looked at the television. Sarah read a book.
