I’m now retired and living with my wife and Springer Spaniel in a village outside Cambridge U.K. I have dual U.K. and Australian citizenship, having lived in the latter and also travelled in Asia, in-between living in London for two years. I came back to the U.K. in 1993 as a Buddhist monk and was later involved in interfaith between Buddhist and Christian monasticism, which led to my returning to lay life. I now identify as a Christian – albeit with Buddhist influences!

My interests lie in writing – prose and poetry, informed by my experience of life plus religion, history, and current affairs. I also enjoy cooking, walking (with wife and dog), and the joys of friendship. I have previously posted on UKAuthors. My verse tends toward rhyming, but as a beginner I’m always willing to improve my craft.

My stories

A Shovel's Weight

My father - a coal miner told us once, that he carried the weight of his family on his shovel. He was also an admirer of D H Lawrence - coming from the same area; and I thought I'd give Arthur Lawrence some recognition for supporting his family in like manner.

Mariangel

Change, as it affects us as we age; though here, I'm entirely in sympathy with the lady portrayed.

Affirmation

An exercise; taking a poem, this being Affirmation by Donald Hall, then keeping the basic form, and recasting it, then revising it further, to see how far it is from the original. I must get out more!

My Favourite Day

I missed last weeks IP, but having read Rhiannon's it inspired me to jot a few lines relating to Winnie the Pooh, along with Mullah Nasruddin one of the great wise fools.

Another Shore

Turn down the empty glass can have two meanings; one being at sea the turning of the hour glass to mark each watch hour; the other is to turn down one's glass, to show that the drinking has now ended.

I liked how you've brought Milnes poem into an outdoor setting - and don't we all have that special spot to rest in?

Well, Jenny, you've done it, and my compliments. My problem is that I can't abide anything of the Pre-Raphaelite, all those insipid women ugh! A personal taste I know, but your take (and Luigi's) is the best with such a challenging topic.

The world turning, and orbiting the sun, while the galaxy hurtles along - and meanwhile how far is an hour in a car? Great idea Rhiannon.

'following flights with earthbound jealousy.'  A perfect simile for our love of birdlife, which has that element of yearning.

A lovely lyrical poem that captures the beat of the drum, and we should remember that the drum was probably our first musical instrument - beating in the outside air. And congrats for the golden cherries Jenny

Interesting poem Ewan. Women

Posted on Sat, 30 Mar 2024

Interesting poem Ewan. Women assumed leading roles in the early church, an example being that of Pheobe, who Paul addresses (in Romans 16 1-2) as diakonos (deakon). And Jesus was notable for encouraging women as disciples - to the outrage of the...
