Endogenous Zone
All we can do is sit publicly, politely
tuck into a downstairs deep corner
of a wine bar, or a pub so basic it has straw on the floor
and welcoming anonymous gloom
we might sit next to each other
because the space is small
and your arm would be touching mine
or perhaps your leg
I wouldn't dare stroke it
but mine might shift in a rhythm
of its own
and we might grin and talk poetry
what we are reading
bubbling nicely on the surface
sipping drinks
while our imaginations take hands and run
upstairs outside to the alley
where you back me up against the wall
away from the light
to be kissed
and rest your shaven cheek on mine
and warm honey loads my eyelids with weight
weakens knees with a desperate wish
to lie down and arch my neck
to breathe out a pleading note
of desire and its answer all at once
and the faintness of it fades the world
and the heat caps my head and dresses my spine
in quicksilver
and you tangle hands in my hair
and I feel you as if we knew every naked inch
had shared a youthful bed so often
that memory thrust up like a reflex
back at our table
we have moved on to ancient history, classics
wicked remarks, witty observations stored up to share
you cover my hand
"are you alright?"
I'd have to stroke my mouth I think
and might even blush
" just a little hot, I'd reply,
just a little hot"
and you'd know
everything
