Secretly,
I'm King of the Vagabond
Gypsies, I
dress in garish silks,
leather boots
and hoops below my headscarf.
Or some days,
I play D'Artagnan, shouting
all for one,
kissing toledo
steel as I
jump on antique furniture.
I explain
pluperfect tenses and you
imagine
my daydreams carnal,
but they're just
the last of childhood's wishes.

I always wanted to be
I always wanted to be D'Artagnan too. Or Robin Hood, Jim Hawkins, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. Or whatever character I was taken with at the time.
I really like the image you've captured in the second stanza particularly. Let's hope these aren't the last of your 'childhood's wishes'.

This makes me feel the urge
This makes me feel the urge to shout:
'Come to an abctales gathering, and dress as your favourite childhood character!'

I love this! Simple and brilliantly written - conjures up one image and sentiment very neatly.
