On Being Disembodied

On Saturday night I’m going to be disembodied. Come along if you want to listen.

You see I was supposed to be attending and reading at the launch of Home, the latest Time Travel Opportunists book - I have a story in it, about Hong Kong Phooey and the cast of Wacky Races - but because I’m working....

AHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

I can’t go.

So instead I have recorded me reading an edited version of the story. It was fun doing this, more so that I could do a SQUEAKY voice for the child in the story that I probably wouldn’t have been able to pull off in the flesh. And I could put sound effects on, and title music and a roaring dinosaur.

This will be my second reading in a week. Last Saturday I was at Stanza. That was fun too although I drank too much wine.

(Note to self - the recording of self will probably, in general, drink less wine. Actually this should be note to liver.)

All this is quite new to me, reading out and listening to stories. Although in a true indication of how advertising works about an hour ago I clicked on a link and have now subscribed to Audible.

For the past year I’ve been eyeing the 26 hour reading of Haruki Murakami’s Wind Up Bird Chronicle.

And as a new member this month I got a free audiobook too. (Philip Pullman reading The Golden Compass. (I am currently reading the last in the series The Amber Spyglass. It is brilliant and I can see why the church hates it - the church in the book wants to wipe out ‘Dust’ which is responsible for original sin. The church doesn’t want anyone to have any free thought. True.)

I’m in the habit of listening to audiobooks now every night as I go to sleep. Each one lasts me months and I can listen to them again and again. My current favourite is Bilbo ridding with Golem in the mountains, when Bilbo steals the ring.

I have been mixing this up with The Mighty Boosh radio series. ‘I’ve never seen you before. You might was well not have a face.’

OK, now I have to go. I am:

1. Cooking my dinner.

2. Working on some writing.

3. Reading some short stories for a competition that I’m judging.

4. Reading the next bit of The Amber Spyglass.

5. Watching Liverpool play in the Champions League.

6. Having a glass of wine.

7. Yeah.
