The lights are off.
You are sleeping
Next to me.
A benign mass;
A trunk of warmth.
There is a silence
In your mind I think.
And tonight we forget
About everything;
The things we wanted,
The things we'll never get.
I creep my bitten nails
Down your back.
I want to prod you
From it's-been-a-long-day sleep.
But this generous
Imperceptibality, my darling,
This leaden harmony,
Is perhaps as good as it gets.
I feel no animosity for you,
A strong amiability,
And perhaps, my love,
(There are no others),
This is as good as it gets.

this is a very intimate scene. However two phrases pulled me from the flow. Benign statue doesn't work for me - can a statue be anything but? Also 'finger you' jars (to me it is too sexual - could just be me, of course.)

I really enjoyed this. I like 'love' poetry to be raw, real, sans rainbows and butterflies. Sometimes it really is as good as it gets; and that's ok.
