Chapter 1
Jamie
As I ran out of my house, very angry, I thought about what had just happened. Ugh, I thought, another fight with my mom. When is this going to end? We were constantly fighting-when she got home from work, if we ever went out to eat, if she forgot to wake me up in the mornings, when I would get back from a friend’s house, or even a fight over a fight. It was stupid. And, we were practically strangers because the only time we ever talked was if we got in an argument.
The quotes “there’s no place like home” and “home is where the heart is,” don’t apply to me. School is the better choice for me, really. I’d rather be there, with all of my friends, people I could talk to without fighting.
I thought about the fight again as I walked down my street. I had no idea where I was going, but I knew this neighborhood perfectly. Something you figure out when you just want to be alone so you go on walks. I had been on so many walks; I had learned the neighborhood completely.
I didn’t realize there was a car parked on the road. I ran into it, and laughed at myself. I went around it and continued walking.
I thought about walking down to one of my friend’s house, but that would mean turning around and going passed my house. And if I did that, my mom was sure to find me.
I remembered the first time my mom had hit me. The pain and scars she has given me, only two people know about. I had some close friends, but I didn’t want people feeling sorry for me, and if someone called 911, my mom could talk the police out of it. Then I’d get beaten even harder. I knew; I’d tried it once. But I had called them. That was three years ago.
I was 13 now, in 9th grade. I had a bunch of friends, I hated fighting and I got along with just about everybody, but the past has made major changes in me. About four and a half years ago, my dad came back from war, injured badly. He was in the hospital and a month later, I visited him and found him lying on the bed in 7028, dead.
A nurse had come in and looked at my nametag. When she asked if he was my dad, it was the way she had said “was” that made me burst into tears.
I looked down at my shoes. My converses were black with white skulls. I had on black skinny jeans, of course, that was the only kind of pants I ever wore, and a blue, striped spaghetti strapped shirt. I pulled my shirt up and stopped walking for a second.
I smiled as I thought of him…sweet, sweet, Jamie. He was my boyfriend right now, and, of course I was completely and totally in love with him. I closed my eyes as I thought of his perfect face. I could see his face perfectly- every inch of it. The shape, size, the way his hair curled and the exact shade of blonde. I could see the shape of his eyes and their beautiful aqua marine color.
I opened my eyes and started walking again. I took a left and then a right 3 streets later and I could see his house. His car was there, and his dad’s wasn’t so I walked even faster to get there.
My mom had no idea about my 16 year old boyfriend, so she had no idea where I went on these random walks of mine.
I knocked on the door and he answered quickly. “Hey!” he said, pulling me up into his arms. I hugged him back, feeling just like a little kid in his arms.
He brought me in and shut the door. He set me down on the couch and he sat down next to me, carefully studying my face.
“Did you get in another fight with your mom?” he stroked my cheek where she had slapped me.
I looked over at him. His expression was blank. “Yeah,” I sighed. Jamie knew it all.
“Baby, I don’t think I can take it much longer. I already want to kill her for hitting you with that belt.” we were both quiet for a minute as I thought about that night when she’d struck me with the belt.
“Do you want to go bowling tonight?” I asked. “I could get my brother to talk to my mom.” I would be going with just Jamie, but my mom didn’t have to know.
“Sure. I have nothing else to do. Plus, I know we can count on Derek.” I smiled. I looked up into his light, aqua eyes, but didn’t say anything. “I love you Rabecca.”
My mouth dropped a little. I smiled, “I love you too, Jamie.” He leaned in toward me a little and I did too. He moved in a little more and gently pressed his lips to mine. He smiled at me, about three inches away from my face.
I wasn’t afraid now. I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him. It was our first kiss in those amazing 4 months.
We finally leaned away and I told him I was going to call Derek. Derek lives alone and he knows about Jamie. He knows everything. He’s let me sneak out with Jamie before because he knows what it’s like to live with my mom. He’s 22 now and the one thing he’s absolutely terrified of is me getting into drugs. Derek had gotten into a lot of trouble with drugs; they almost ruined his life.
Jamie had been afraid of the drug thing too. His mom had died from overdose, so, of course, he was completely against it. And, knowing these stories, it doesn’t really encourage me to do it.
“Derek said he’ll do it. Could you just drop me off by the woods?” since my mom didn’t know about him, he always dropped me off in front of the woods that were a few houses down from my house.
“Sure,” he smiled down at me. I didn’t care if he was way too old for me- 3 years. I loved him and he loved me.
