Shoveling snow from abandoned rooftops
in Yellowstone would do me.
That kind of raptured loneliness,
wrapped in a blank white silence,
the world a crisp new page
unmarked by the clattering punctuation of people.
Surely there you would only ever hear,
after the sigh of sloughing snow slipping
from the gables, the sound of the single human heart,
a kind of harmony -
if one thing only can ever be in tune
or even needs to be.
Now that would be a flawless music,
inventing its own time signature,
an orchestra and audience of
one.

This is so timely for me -
This is so timely for me - I'm the other side of the USA right now up in the north of New Hampshire. I climbed Mount Morgan and Mount Percival this morning in order to get the most fantastic views of Squam Lake (where they filmed On Golden Pond). It was completely awesome (I've been here for a bit!) - and probably the first time the word has been used correctly since I've been here. The only real problem is that Americans build their paths to go straight up - no zigging and zagging for them - so you end up half climbing and half walking up their 'trails'. I am now stiff and sore but I made it - and I'm darn glad that I did!

beautifully written, this line: "unmarked by the clattering punctuation of people" is my favourite, you make this piece a real treat to read.
