The little leaf

The little leaf
A little leaf grew on a tree
‘How will I know when to fall?’
It asked of every living thing
Coming near enough to call
It never got an answer
As it grew upon its tree
Not really so surprising
‘Cos leaves have no ears you see
But through the year it grew there
A brilliant shade of green
People saw it in their hundreds
The most wondrous leaf e’r seen
In autumn it changed colour
From green to mellow gold
The leaf still pleased to be admired
Not knowing it was old
But as its stem got weaker
Its colour changed to crinkly brown
Then a strong wind blew it off its branch
It fluttered slowly to the ground
‘What is my purpose now in life?’
The leaf asked feeling lost
Then a tidy gardener came along
And turned it into compost.
