He spoke softly to you;
coaxed eyelids fall shut.
I go outside for some air;
seek solace, such as it is,
in a nicotine stick. Wrap
my scarf around my neck.
It clashes with my coat;
the one you made me
nearly twenty years ago
for my seventh birthday.
The one with that hole
where you dropped a stitch.
I looked for it for an age
on my hands and my knees,
way beneath your settee
in a ‘hobgoblin’s lair’...
Until you ruffled my hair –
said, “Supper’s ready,”
and you blew on my chips;
told me, “Slow down –
they’re hot!” Right now, how
I long for your breath; if only
to mute the silence.

Just beautiful, particularly
Just beautiful, particularly the last couple of lines. Brings back my father's death. In a good way :o]

A hello to you Sand lady.
I liked this, but, once you drop a stich you will never find it.
And to say I had fish & chips on the beach last night.

Hi Tina,
I just loved the lines:-
I looked for it for an age
on my hands and knees,
way beneath the settee
in a 'hobgoblin's lair'...
reminded me of when I was young, I used to hide
things in strange places, then find them years
later.
This was a great read, thanks.
Jenny.

I, too, was going to list
I, too, was going to list all the luscious lines in this poem that jumped right off the page at me, but the others beat me to it. This poem tells a first rate story, which is all that really matters. Beautiful piece of creative fiction!
