When I Wake Up Next To You

When the night is still and calm and all the world’s asleep
And the warm dark all around us is unfathomably deep,
I lie and wonder what you’d say if you only knew
Just how good it feels to be the one who wakes up next to you.
You’ve made my life here so complete, there’s nothing I would change,
It fits me like a pattern, through the thread is bright and strange,
It still seems so unreal; I try to believe that it’s true-
That you love me, and are happy when I wake up next to you.
Watching images traverse your dreaming-space like flakes of snow
Taking you far, far away to the place only you know.
It isn’t nice to sleep alone in a bed that’s made for two-
I never feel as safe as when I wake up next to you.
And now it doesn’t matter if life’s cruel to me or good,
The simplicity of us heals more than anything else could.
I have your faith behind me, and I know that I’ll get through
Because life just seems so easy when I wake up next to you.
The luxury of brightening the place where shadows creep
In companionable silence, lying snuggled cheek-to-cheek.
There is nothing more that I desire, my wishes have come true:
To be sure that I adore you, and to know you love me too.
