Lest This Day

An old folks' home, the lined up chairs
Yesterday there were no spares,
Today there is one empty space
Dot's moved on to a "better place".
An infants' school, the lined up hooks
Yesterday two kids shared books,
Today they all have one book each
To Gemma there's nought else to teach.
A terraced street, the lined up doors
It could be mine, perhaps it's yours,
Today one hides a sea of tears
Tom won't see his mid-life years.
A barracks room, the lined up cots
Today there are two vacant spots,
Bri and Jake, so full of beans
Blown away, still in their teens.
A cemetery, the lined up stones
Life reduced to boxed-up bones,
Lest this day should prove your last
Live it well lest it slip past.
