Two weeks later the great day arrived. Abigail had returned from her travels and came to see her apprentice in action. Rebecca made sure that nothing went wrong and kept a crowd of excited goblins out of range of the magic, while Jennifer Jane made a speech in her best royal manner.
“It is with great pleasure that I declare this box operational, may it produce many delicious meals.” Jennifer Jane concealed her finger twiddle with a sweeping gesture, in the best tradition used by witches when performing magic in front of crowds.
The Oldest Goblin had come to the pool especially for the occasion and after a short speech, presented the giant with his waterproof cloak. It had been beautifully made from a lovely leafy green coloured material.
There was a detachable warm inner lining patterned in orange, green and red shades. The waterproof outside blended with the colours of the trees surrounding the pool, while the inside was similar to the shades of autumn leaves and would remind the giant that it was the time of year when he should use it to keep warm.
The giant tried on his new cloak and admired his reflection in the pool. He was so overcome with all the attention, that he only just managed to say ’Thank you all, it’s the first present anyone’s ever given me,’ before bursting into tears.
Everybody had to leave in a hurry to avoid getting soaked. Jennifer Jane went home to tell her parents that everything had gone according to plan and that she hadn’t made any mistakes with her spell.
“I’ll go back tomorrow when he’s had a chance to settle down a bit and see how he’s getting on.”
