Let's start again

Memories take time to be forgotten
In entirety, I agree
Nor do I deny that his hands, his mouth
On mine felt special, different
Unusual, poetic even
It was easy to forget
The vows we both had taken
Honey, if only you too could feel such passion
Nothing like ours-so staid, so measured
Those forced antics in the bed
Following a dinner in front of the telly
All those times during the planned
Time share holidays.
I wish I could show you as well the romance
Of being thrown down on a bed
When you know you shouldn’t be in there….
And I still remember your face when I told you this
When you knew
Of him, his love which had made
Me , shift out of my shift dresses
My classic touch me not look
Replaced with a wildness I didn’t know
Instead you asked - can you forget?
For the sake of the kids, can we start again?
I said yes but there was no ending that glorious abandon
For years, we lived our roles, you not guessing
Or perhaps guessing and keeping quiet
A shamble of a marriage.
Years have gone by, the children have grown
We have lived too many years together
To be of need to anyone else
The passion has long been cast aside
And as I watch you lying so still
I am whispering
Let’s start again
As you lie silent and the machines hum for you
I hold your hand, somewhat more wrinkled than mine
And for all that’s worth say let’s start again
This time for real.
