Walking alone through
the Kentish woodland
one quiet Sunday,
I stepped off the path
for no apparent reason
and made my way
deeper and deeper
into the trees.
I found a glade
sheltered by an oak,
the dark green leaves
hanging low over
a mossy bank, and there
I laid my head and slept.
An hour or so later
I was woken by the
movement of the late
afternoon sunlight as it
gently flickered through
the branches and
played on my eyelids.
Over the years
I have been in a
lot of churches,
but never one that
woke me up to peace
in the way that one did.
