Jerry was driving all over parts of the east and west of most of the United States in one of these huge eighteen wheel truck and trailer rigs that you see throughout the country.
He drove on all the roads and major highway making pickup's and deliveries.
It was a good life buy lonely at times.
He had a huge load to deliver in the Seattle Washington area that he picked up in Sparks Nevada. Once that load was delivered he worked his way out of Seattle to make a quick pickup in Hermiston, Oregon.
After driving hundreds of miles he was pretty much exhausted.
He figured that he only had another hour or so to get to Hermiston to pick up his new load from what his G.P.S showed on his dashboard.
Although it was already an hour-and-a-half into darkness he kept on driving a few more miles then noticed a sign showing a truck stop about a mile and half ahead.
It was like a voice telling him that he should stop there for the night.
Being real safety cautious he turned into the truck stop. He pulled his trunk and trailer rig into a good parking position at the lot and turned the engine off and grabbed his mileage log book.
Jerry sat there behind the steering wheel and entered his mileage in his book.
He laid his head against the steering wheel and fell asleep. Just a few minutes later he awoke suddenly? With his head laying over the top of his hands on the steering wheel, he looked out the windshield on to the parking lot.
He saw a dog that was very slowly walking and looking like he hadn't eaten in many days.
Jerry watched him, the dog went under one of the big trucks that was parked there and just kind of fell against the back tires of the truck.
Almost at the same time he could see the driver of the truck climb into the driver's seat.
Jerry quickly jumped out of his truck onto the black top and ran across the lot to where the truck was parked and snatched the dog from beneath the truck.
It was just in time, the truck had just started his engine and as Jerry pulled the dog from beneath the truck, it began to pull away without knowing the dog was there.
Jerry cuddled and held the dog close to his chest and kept talking to him to settle him down as the dog struggled to break loose from him.
He carried the dog over to the cab of his truck and placed him on the seat of the passenger side of the truck. He gently rubbed his head and said to him this will be your bed for now. Jerry lock the doors of his truck and went across the street to a little store that was open all-night.
He purchased some food and water for the little guy. Before leaving the store Jerry asked the store clerk if anyone had been looking for a little blond redheaded dog, no," but that dog has been around here for three or four days.
I fed him some food the other day.
I think someone dumped the little guy.
Jerry thanked the clerk and went back to his truck and glanced down through the window at the dog which was sound asleep on the seat.
He unlocked the door and the dog very slowly raised his head looking at Jerry with the most scared sad looking eyes.
Jerry took the dog outside the truck and put some food on a paper plate that he had in the truck. He went through some stuff that he had in his sleeping area behind his seats and found an old coffee mug and filled it with water and put it down next to the food.
The dog immediately drank the water and ate all the food. As he reached to refill the dogs plate and cup, he licked Jerry’s hand in happiness. His tail was wagging back and forth as he ate all the food and most of the water again.
A few hours later Jerry put a little thin rope around him to use as a leash and walked him around the truck lot a number of times.
I knew from then on that we would be together for a long time.
Early the following morning we left the truck stop around six am. The little guy was sitting there on the seat looking out the door window as we passed the other trucks that were parked there.
Jerry said, I need to give you a name, since you are a little rusty- blond looking dog,
I’ll call you Rusty. He reached over and patted his head, it seemed he was happy with that name.
Ok" Rusty, hold on were on our way to make our pick up in Hermiston, Oregon.
Rusty” I'm not sure what's there in Hermiston but I'm sure they have a few stores there where
I can get you some more food and me some popcorn that I can snack on as we travel.
We should be there in a few hours.
Rusty looked over towards him and gave him
a little happy growl as if to say, let’s go……
As they went on to make many pickups and deliveries in towns and states over the year.
Jerry would walk him with a leash whenever he could stop at truck stops or resting area.
It seemed that Rusty new when we were getting close to stopping, he would get so excited that we were going to stop.
Over the past year, he and Rusty became very close friends. They were together all the time, they had a little place in the truck that Jerry could set up a small camping table.
It was about twenty-by-twenty inches so Rusty and he could face each other when they would eat. When Jerry would talk to Rusty, It seemed that Rusty understood everything Jerry said.
He told Rusty that they were in Bakersfield California and in the morning he would get a call from the company telling him where they would go to make the next pickup.
Rusty sat there at the small table eating as Jerry was talking wagging his tail and giving a few growls.
Jerry finished talking by saying we better get some sleep now, that call will come early in the morning. Later that night when Jerry was asleep, Rusty would cuddle up against his feet and often pull the blanket off of Jerry and on to himself. During the night Jerry would wake up cold and look down toward Rusty who had the blanket wrapped around him. Jerry smiled and said, "hey" partner we need to share the blanket.
Rusty would give him a little growl and they both snored on through the night.
Early the next morning the call came in from the company informing Jerry where to make his next pick up....
Ok Rusty we are on our way to make a pickup in San Diego.
As he was holding Rusty close to him he said this is great I have a very good friend at the truck stop where we will stay when we get to San Diego. He's the owner of a restaurant at the truck stop there.
Jerry said ok, it’s time for our morning snack as he unwrapped a few granola bars, Rusty was getting all excited moving back-and-forth.
As they sat there in the truck for a few minutes while the truck warmed up both finishing their granola bars and getting ready to go.
Jerry said” So let's get this truck on the road. As he was moving the truck around to get it on the highway, Rusty took his usual spot with his head out the window. Jerry pushed a CD into the player which started playing “on the road again.
Rusty with his head out the window started growling and barking with joy and happiness.
After a number of hours on road they arrived in San Diego.
Jerry Parked his truck and trailer rig at the truck stop and left Rusty who was asleep on the front seat. He walked across the truck lot to see his friend David, the owner of the restaurant there.
After visiting with David for a few minutes, he got a call from his company asking him if he could rush over to make one of his pickups earlier than planned. There was an emergency there and they had to close early.
Jerry said” sure no problem, call them and tell them I'll be there in about 30 or 40 minutes to make the pickup.
He told David, I'll talk to you later, have to rush to make a pickup a few miles away.
As Jerry quickly rushed back over to his truck and unlocked the door he noticed Rusty was not there. The passenger side window was partially open. Jerry" quickly ran all round the lot looking for Rusty and talking to other drivers to see if they had seen Rusty, no one had heard or seen him. Jerry had to get back to his truck.
He kept looking under every one’s truck and trailer near his.
Jerry leaned his head against the door of his truck before getting in and said" Lord please let Rusty be ok and keep him safe. His heart was broken at the thought of losing his friend.
We have been together for quite awhile.
As he went on to make his pick up he could hardly control his emotions going there without Rusty.
After making his pick up, it was very late in the evening. He went back over to where David was to see if he had heard anything about Rusty.
As he was making his turn into the truck stop about midnight, there was Rusty at the entrance of the truck stop. As he seen the truck his ears stood straight up and his tail started wagging.
Jerry said” thank you-thank you Lord.
I stopped my eighteen Wheeler rig in the middle of the street entrance and jumped out and ran to Rusty and held him close.
Rusty was so excited to see me that he licked me all over my face. They both got back into the truck and pulled into a parking place.
A couple of days later they were back on the road again. Jerry and Rusty can still be seen driving along the countries highways with Rusty’s head partly out of the window, his hair blowing in the wind…………….The End
