Mary

Mary can’t sleep, same old bore, bed at 11, wake up at 4
Same old routine, same old chore
Why can’t it be like when I was a girl?
She flops out of bed in her threadbare jimjams
Needs to seek out tea, chocolate and tremazipan
Tired fuzzy head all in a whirl
Shoves her tired feet inside her old pair of Snoopy’s
Shuffles downstairs scratching her bum, thinking it’s
drooping
Her mind filled with dreams of the past
When she was never sad, giggled on the shoulders of
her dad
Ran mad on her bike, only ate food that she liked
Went to bed for a sleep that would last
She raids the fridge, opens chocolates and biccies
She misses Harry and could really do with a quickie
To send her right off to sleep
But Harry has gone with the slag from the offie
So Mary has chocolate fingers and coffee
I don’t know what I ever saw in the creep
She flicks through her Cosmo all through her midnight feast
Well I don’t have cellulite, cancer and children, at least
But the memory of Harry still lingers
She drains her coffee, finishes the last of the Green and Blacks
Licks her lips gratefully and heads back to the sack
Maybe I’ll get off with just my fingers
She gets up, switches off the kitchen light, immediately plunged back into night
Thinks of Brighton, of Paris, of the Spanish beach, the night in the garden
Thinks of the time she first saw his cock
Of when he made such a fuss, she got it out on the bus, he called it cock propulsion
She made a joke about bikes, but then blanched in repulsion
When he told her about his cocksock
She goes to the window and looks outside, thinking of Harry, of Simon and Dale
Then melts thinking of Rob, of his smell and wonders when he’s out of jail
How he made her tremble with his stares
She’s wet and she’s ready, heads upstairs for beddy, but suddenly loses her grip
At the top of the stairs, her Snoopy’s give way and she feels herself starting to slip
Headfirst down the stairs
She tumbled over and over then her head hit the floor with a sickening thud
She murmured in pain as a spreading warm lagoon of blood
Began to pool round her head
The pain disappeared and on her face a smile did creep
Rob and Harry and Dale emerged to carry her at last into sleep
So what if it means I am dead?
