Broken shells crunched under my callous feet
skin worn, an old tyre.
The sand swelled, greedy for each step
swallowing, a reptile.
The sea drowned the foot holes
the foaming scum welded.
Cuttlefish bones scattered
no headstones.
Monochrome pebbles sewn together
smooth like a vultures head.
Broad cliffs blackened by rain
with gaps, missing teeth.
We had walked for miles
no care for the aging sky.
We skimmed rocks over the froth
like a pint of Guinness.
I remember your smiling face
reflecting the cracks of drift wood.
The bitter wind couldn’t chill you
the black and white wouldn’t faze you.

I liked this as I live
I liked this as I live overlooking the sea and on the beach most days.
A nice reminder for me to collect a piece of driftwood.
