An Indian weekly market
P K Routray
To my respected readers I must brief on an Indian site
where I usually make weekly twice my visit.
It is a biweekly market for common people
to sell and purchase grocery and vegetable.
Farmers bring vegetables green and fresh,
Mini traders bring clothes, other commodities and cosmetics for a barter exchange.
Rates are volatile and depend on demand and supply,
To bargain with the sellers I usually enjoy.
Coconut to banana, potato to pumpkin comes in plenty,
When I see them fresh and lively, the site to me is a scene of beauty.
As if the market is a vegetable garden,
And trees and plants are sitting in from human.
Many come to meet their distant friends,
A man from village usually does not have mobile gadgets to talk as and when he wants,
Ladies come with colorful dress and traditional ornaments,
After all it is for their dignity and market is a public place.
Vegetables are carried in basket over the head,
To the Indian villagers a penny saved can make a hundred.
They have physical strength and capable feet to walk,
While walking in a group to market they find time and friends for many things to talk.
Market is not only a place for sale and purchase of daily necessities,
Many side activities are run like sale of variety of foods and provision of recreation facilities.
Meat and fish are sold at slightly distant spots,
You see them live but in front of you into pieces the butcher cuts.
In summer seasons cows and buffalo are sold and purchased,
in peasants’ preparation for cultivation and for house hold need for the season ahead.
The markets are generally in a mango grove for pleasant shed,
As they are held during day time artificial lights are not needed.
Further people have to travel miles to reach their home,
Under darkness for females, children and old, travel may be troublesome.
Nobody knows the time since when this market started,
nor the reason for days of the week on which it is held.
You may be awestruck to see the foods available and eaten in this market place,
But no untoward incidents like epidemics are caused because of these, may be due to God’s grace.
When one visits and purchases at such market place,
He not only gets fresh vegetables but also recreates with common mass and for his tension he gets solace.
