The First Christmas - The Servant's Tale
By kheldar
- 1506 reads
My master was a carpenter
Nazareth his home,
In the land of Israel
Beneath the yoke of Rome.
My mistress was a maiden
Innocent and pure,
Yet in her womb at God's command
The Son of Man she bore.
So said a glowing angel
Who came to them one night,
No one saw me as I watched
And trembled at the site.
Soon after came an edict
Each man must make his way,
Unto the place from whence he came
His taxes there to pay.
So we walked to Bethlehem
Three days upon the road,
Stoutly on my sturdy back
I carried a precious load.
The town was full of people
For us there was no room,
So it was the babe was born
Within a stable's gloom.
I stood in head bowed silence
So not to wake the child,
Cradled in his mother's arms
Of womanhood most mild.
From my quiet corner
I watched as shepherds came,
Sent by a golden herald
The Saviour to proclaim.
I watched as twelve nights later
Three kings from realms afar,
Came with praise and precious gifts
Led by a shining star.
So it was these great events
With my own eyes I saw,
I may have lived in service
But I could not wish for more.
I trod the path to Bethlehem
With Mary on my back,
I slept in that same stable
Yet did not comfort lack.
My master & my mistress
I served with willing heart,
Though but a simple donkey
I'm glad I played my part.
