Chasing a Rainbow

Hooves pause in misty
silence; a deer
gathering strength within
the domain
of his inheritance --

others share this habitat,
jealous for venison.

Quickly on his feet
young buck crosses ridges
sheltered ravines; a
deadly race from
three coyotes --

shadows within the forest,
anxious for a taste
of fresh meat.

Escape continues
across clear-cuttings,
down ancient trails
muddying streams;
and the next moment
disappears --

pursuing hunters tested
by a majestic foe,
bested by this noble Prince.

Thank you so much, Jenny. This was one of the first poems I began after giving up hunting deer. Now they don't have me to worry about, I'm sending them a message to watch out for the wolves. Richard LP
