What if love was banned? …
and hatred had the upper hand
(and selfishness – the love of self allowed!
with greed, each one self-focussed, proud):
no neutral ground between the two,
no loyalty, or trust – what would ensue?
dictatorship, the weak succumb,
and everyone unhappy, everyone.

And if intentions loving
were always doubted, disbelieved,
that they could be sincerely conceived,
and anyone would truly care
for someone else, deny themselves to spare
some hurt, or harm, or sorrow
from falling yet again upon a fellow
human being, save them from distress,
or meet a need in kindness generous,
and unconditional, no strings attached, –

how sad, such cynicism, sneers,
but then
we still would try to love again, again …

We're not that far off then..I know, I'm being cynical, or am I? Hideously self-absorbed footballers, crooked cricketers, even rugby players can't be complacent, and as for those in positions of power, those that govern, blood sucking lawyers and bonkers bankers, all above the law yet still, unbelievably, held in high esteem. A jealous middle-class, an invisible upper-class and a very bloody angry underclass (I almost said working class there but chance would be a fine thing). Not happy puppies, really, are we?

Blighters rock – yes, I know, but maybe we do need to concentrate on ourselves and (I know it sounds "pious") setting an example. And trying not to be too quick to 'tar everyone with the same brush', notice attempts to get away from selfishness. Peer pressure does push towards 'look out for yourself, no-one else will' 'he did it to you, do it back to him', doesn't it? Not easy to go against the tide sometimes, and get scorned as a weakling (needs greater strength to go against the tide!), or wet etc. Maybe it comes back to 'As I have loved you, so you must love one another' (Jesus, in John 13:34), and his example and teaching to love and try to do good to enemies. Knowing mercy means we understand other's weaknesses, and have pity even if we see how detrimental it is. Didn't mean to write so much. Thanks for the IP idea and your comment. Rhiannon
