I REMEMBER

I can just about remember
The House where I was born;
The little brown bits where the dog
Had crapped upon the lawn.
He wasn’t with us very long,
Mum wouldn’t let him stay
She got so cheesed off with his mess
She had him took away.
Only too well I remember
My Dad’s face red and white -
He’d been down to the boozer
And got into a fight.
Mum chucked him back outside the door
The night was cold and wet -
If it hadn’t been his Birthday
He’d still be out there yet!
We all can still remember
Him laying by the swing
He was almost paralytic
It was such a funny thing.
My Mum took pity on him then
And brought him back inside
She got a towel and wiped his brow
Then he dropped down and died!
I remember, I remember
The yew trees dark and high;
When they put my old man in the ground
Under a stormy sky.
I swear I heard him laughing
But I could feel no joy
At burying my Father
When I was just a boy.
