The pessimistic turn

I'm at the moon, dudes! Al Reinert 'For All Mankind'. What a show! They don't make em like that anymore.

Followed by the 1970s - sophistication and the end of innocence. Petroleum scarce and dwindling. Next thing after the moon is too far away and, when you get to it, there's nothing there. Humanity closes the curtains and turns on the TV.

Makes me think - a lot. We seem to have gone back to following the plough in a landscape of fear: "Security", "Health", "The Economy". We have become prisoners, where once we were adventurers. We have ceased to wonder as a species.

All the crises have rolled into one. Everyone is working their own escape, but there's nowhere to escape to.

Imagination is a criminal waste of one's time. Efficiency is an end in itself. Infinate ROI is our destiny.

Somebody throw me some hope.

I have my opinions on this matter but they are politically incorrect and the worst of them would see me vilified as an extremist bigot who has learnt nothing from the past. I would have no more friends, develop an awful stammer, start dribbling and shaking and, if I wasn't beaten to a pulp, eventually fall off the wagon, go on a massive bender and wake up in prison splashed across the front page of national newspapers as the face of everything that's wrong with Britain. So, until we wake up and smell the cappuccino, I will watch, wait and stay very quiet because I want to stay sober and find God.

Hi Stan and Trev. I wouldn't mind so much if I was surrounded by cacti, chiquitas and hombres, with a Margarita or two for company. Arid. Now that's an underused word in this neck of the woods.

Yes, it's funny, PT, I used to use the word 'arid' a lot, avid-ly you might say. Now, you hardly see it as you rightly point out. I think we ought to kick-start its comeback. It's such a lovely word and it suits your humour to a tee. Trev
