Limiting the limitless?
P K Routray
I remember,
my grand mother
telling me stories
to mitigate my mother’s miseries
every evening till I sleep,
to enable my mother a relief
for household chores
from preparation of dinners to closing the doors,
My grandmother used to tell,
an endless tale,
which never ends,
now me it offends.
The story is as thus,
a demon caught all the birds,
for witchcrafts of wicked wizards,
kept in a cage with a little door,
gave them no food, no water.
A kind king killed the demon,
opened the small door for birds’ liberation,
only one bird can fly
out of the small door to sky,
to my query “what further”,
my grandma tells me a “Furr”
sounding the bird’s flying sound
making me sleep bound.
The story never ended.
Till now of my foolishness I am reminded.
It was endless for me,
Later in it confusion I could see.
Now I know endless is infinite which never ends,
but there is an end to the counting of birds and the sands on river beds.
But still I am a foolish at this age of sixty.
Can my limit of knowledge encompass the limitless infinity?
it is also a cheating like that of my grandmother,
To limit the infinite with finite is a foolish act of first order.
My conception on infinite today has the same childhood limitation.
Think for a while, how can limit knowledge bind the limitless in the conception?
