BEYOND THE CLOUDS (I.P.)

I raise my eyes up to the sky
See the moon behind a cloud
Will it rise again tomorrow?
And I wonder Why?–
Why death? Why sorrow?
This world is very beautiful
And mankind should be proud
Of all it has achieved
But - why sickness? Famine? Need?
The answer’s up there somewhere –
Beyond the clouds.
That’s what we all believed -
When we were young.
We thought we held the key.
Bathed in the music of new hope
It really seemed that we
Could bestride the Moon and Mars –
Find magic songs unsung
Reach out and touch the stars.
More than forty years have passed
Since the whole world held its breath –
As men in a rocket soared so high
Far from this planet, facing death –
Left human cares behind -
Walked with the gods at last
Upon untrodden soil –
Mans giant leap for mankind!
Yet still on earth we toil
And still there’s need and pain.
Yet we are sure that very soon
The clouds will pass again
Revealing in the velvet night
A shining orb. Cool mystic light –
And once more we’ll start to pray,
With hope renewed.
And we will sing a sweeter tune
Knowing that one long gone day
Men once walked upon the Moon.
