HAIRCUT

yes, sam was getting married
it was time to settle down
to have a bride along his side
and move into the town
his life had been quite freakish
in a counter culture mode
thought he would tweak and finally seek
the line that should be toed
his lovely wife-to-be
had seen a diamond in the rough
agreed, was she, with family
that he'd be up to snuff
the first thing was a haircut
down his back, sam's tresses rolled
and to be wed, this shaggy head
would have to be controlled
he didn't know a barber
but he caught one on the fly
while cruising 'round the heart of town
by chance, one caught his eye
and screwing up his courage
he pulled up and went inside
twas only hair, it just seemed fair
to satisfy his bride
the barber shop was empty
of all customers but him
his courage froze as stylist rose
and said, "you need a trim ?"
he almost lost his gumption
but she took by the wrist
"its been a while since you've been styled
you're on our wanted list "
he laughed and then was seated
but yet tension filled his gut
when barber, there, combed out his hair
and asked how much to cut
he told her, "let's go crazy
rise it high above my ears"
he closed his eyes and with a sigh
leaned back to face his fears
he heard the scissors clicking
and he knew she'd go for broke
while at her task, some questions asked
and this is what she spoke
"what caused this big decision ?
is it just to land a job ?
or please the world ? perhaps a girl
who thinks you are a slob ?"
he told her of the nuptials
and the woman he would wed
and of the plan of she and clan
to make him better bred
she asked his occupation
"writing poems has been my work
but wolves, a-roar, are at the door
so i'll become a clerk"
"i will leave my tie-dye costumes
for her folks will not approve
and i'll leave my funky cottage
to the suburbs, i will move"
"i have been a nonconformist
but its time i take my leave
the world will see a brand new me
a change will be perceived
but as he was intoning
all his future plans and schemes
it sounded grim, at least to him
a nightmare born from dreams
their scissors ceased their clicking
to the table, they were dropped
in misery, he soon would see
his coiffures closely cropped
when he turned to face the mirror
he was filled with angst and dread
but what a shock, his flowing locks
still rested on his head
she'd been behind him, standing
clicking scissors in the air
inherently, she knew that he
would want to keep his hair
and he thanked her for her hunches
and he asked her for the fee
"i don't feel gypped, i never clipped
i guess you'd call this free"
and freedom was the answer
independence was the song
to change one's soul to fit a mold
was something clearly wrong
so he broke up with his girlfriend
and he kept his funky shack
and he'd emote through poems he wrote
with tie-dye on his back
though he didn't need a haircut
he decided he should stop
to have a chat with that girl at
delilah's barber shop
