I Dreamt

I Dreamt
I saw my Mum last night,
I saw her from over the street.
She waved and smiled
And hurried across
Though I didn’t recall
We’d arranged to meet.
She was dressed different
To how I remember
With a fine hat pulled low
Shielding her eyes
And something that looked
Like a cloak or a cape
But she gave me no time
To say my goodbyes
“What’s the hurry?” I said,
Trying to hang out the time
“We have an appointment
For which we cannot be late”
“But there are things in the balance
I need to put right”
“It’s too late for that now dear,
We’ve arrived at the gate.”
Next morning I could only guess at the words
My two daughters would struggle to say
As they each tripped and stumbled
To explain as to why
It was impossible for them to come;
Absolutely no way!
When questioned more closely
Each eventually explained
That in this situation
It just would not be right
For each of us
To carry on as if normal
When the truth is we lost our mum
Late last night.
So, to each of my daughters,
When that shining light is there
And you know it is a beacon
That only you can see
And you dare not be late
For your appointment at the gate
You can be sure that I will come for you
Just as my mum came for me!
