WHEN CATS DELIVER MAIL

i had a girl who won my heart
with her enchanting eyes
we'd hold each other all night long
and make romantic sighs
infatuated ? yes, indeed
infatuation dies
but i was still in love with her
my heart, a booby prize
i poured my heart out to this girl
twas such a soggy tale
but lord, she was a heartless gal
and me, a brainless male
she said our love, while once quite fresh
had grown diseased and stale
and swore that she'd come back to me
when cats delivered mail
well, i still had a shred of pride
and held to it real tight
cause when you're knocked down by a train
you've got to see the light
when love puts on it's boxing gloves
it ain't no use to fight
so i slipped on my walking shoes
and stole away that night
i took the road to who-knows-where
and forged a steady trail
my path was straight and forward
as a locomotive's rail
i told my heart to shut it's mouth
that logic would prevail
and swore that i'd go back to her
when cats delivered mail
i moved into another town
and found a place to stay
i knew that i could find myself
if she were far away
although sometimes she'd cross my mind
i kept that hound at bay
for if i thought about her smile
i'd soon become her prey
one day i looked out my front door
and gave a little wail
a cat was walking up the drive
a note tied to it's tail
the note said, "hon, i love you still
come back and do not fail"
and to this day i can't believe
that cat delivered mail
