Things to tell your mother

I love you
and I always have
It’s just easier to tell you now
Thank you
for life
for my childhood
for a family
Maybe it wasn’t perfect
but I’ve been around
and I’ve yet to see one that is
It wasn’t bad, though, was it?
Thank you
for the love that you
show me unconditionally
I’m sorry
for the times I didn’t give it back
We’ve had our fights
our ups and downs
But I think you’re right
we’re just too much alike
Blame it on the urge to be different
I’m sorry
for the things I’ve done
that let you down
for the things I’ve said
that hurt you
for the times I’ve been too busy
and the times I’ve put you last
for the times I’ve seen you suffer
and never been of help
Whenever I see you struggling
I struggle, too
I’m sorry
for the evenings that you spend
on your own
for all the loneliness you've felt
I guess I want to tell you
that I’m glad you’re my mam
and I wouldn’t have it any other way
I just wish I could call in every day
for cups of tea
a bicker
and a Yorkshire curd tart
