Management is a game
to keep us entertained and occupied
between launching into
catastrophic wars

And lacking suitably qualified people
is applied in a Fordist
broken-down-to-nuts-and-bolts
kind of way

Management by numbers
Changing the world with Fuzzy Felt

No one dies
A few might lose their jobs
but probably would have anyway

It provides people with mobile phones
and laptops
who otherwise might not have them

Gives a reason to set the alarm
skip breakfast and spill coffee

And, to be fair
what would we be doing
if we weren't playing management games?

Interesting, this piece makes the reader think. I think the concept of management being a game that the "important" people play is really effective and also very true.

PT, the few things I've taken from the concept of management - looking in from the outside - are: You have to keep your bungling hypocrisy and favouritism well hidden, because your surfs are cleverer than they first appear and can second guess your motives with ease. If one of your underlings is better than you at something, then bloody well tell them - chances are they already know, and for you to pretend otherwise just makes you look like a tit. Never claim responsibility for anything. Any question you don't know the answer to can be forehand-returned back over the net in the form of another question. Why not take advantage of the hypothetical in these situations? Chuck a couple of random variables in there - now watch the original question asker squirm. As you can tell, I've had bad experience of managers! I echo maggy's comment - this is an interesting poem, not least (for me) because of my dislike of every manager I've encountered!

Hi Maggy. I think it was one overheard phone call too many. You should publish that as a management manual Steve. Reads like a Harvard paper. It's a game anyone can play alvin. Just check your soul in at reception. Thank you Bear.
