Daddy's Gone

Staring off across the moor
husband gone to fight a war,
nightmares are an only friend
as his footsteps turn the bend,
now she pines in disarray
mind confusion on this day,
his job now is keeping peace
but for her there's no release,
turning with a saddened tear
seeing children she holds dear,
they approach she must be strong
let them know their daddy's gone,
he couldn't say his fond goodbyes
the wrenching of those tearful eyes,
“where's daddy?” they cry in sobbing tone,
then mum said, “Come on let's all go home.”
In the kitchen while making dinner
she explains they start to whimper,
her heart breaking letting them know
their only daddy has a long way to go,
but they were always in his thoughts
with letters for them each of course,
In angels she had put her faith and
asked if they would keep him safe,
bring him back where he belongs
with loving wife and little ones.

Hi Jenny
Hi Jenny
I know you wrote this some time ago, but with the soldiers shaving to go back to Afganistan in the news today, I expect there will be lots of confused and unhappy children and wives again.
