Cruel

"Why are you so cruel?" Those were the marks last words. The man removed the silencer from the barrel of the Beretta. It was a fair question, but one he really had no answer for.
Stepping over the body he gazed out the open window at the city skyline. Not much to look at tainted as it was from years of industrial pollution.
He placed the weapon in the marks hand. As always his aim had been true. That coupled with his attention to detail over the years were the reasons his services were always in demand. Another job well done, another apparent suicide.
"Why are you so cruel?" What was he, a philosopher?
Turning about he headed for the apartment door. maybe he'd grab a pizza, no Chinese.
"Why are you so cruel?" It was barely a whisper.
He turned, the stiletto in his hand ready to go to work. But the room was empty.
The knife disappeared back into its holster. Nerves. Maybe steak instead of Chinese.
He opened the door stepped into the empty hall, then closing it silently behind him he headed for the exit.
A cacophony of noise assaulted his ears as he stepped onto the sidewalk. People yelling, sirens wailing, horns blaring.
"Why are you so cruel?" It cut through the city noise loud clear. He looked about, but no one was looking back.
Feeling disconcerted he raised his collar against the chilled air and began walking.
"Why are you so cruel?" louder. he walked faster. Skip the steak, maybe he'd head for the bar.
"Why are you so cruel?" The city noise went quiet.
"Why are you so cruel?" A whisper in his mind.
Hands over his ears, thrown off balance, confused, the man stepped backwards off the curb directly into the oncoming traffic.
"Before the commuter bus struck, the man saw his last victim staring at him from the sidewalk. He was grinning.
"Why are you so cruel?" the man asked a split second before his life ended.
The mark shook his head, then replied "Because people are cruel."
